Book-It Reading Log - Students are expected to read 50 minutes a week to an adult in February. Parents may read with their children or take turns reading during this early part of the program. Write in how many minutes each day your child actually read TO another person. Return the sheet at the end of the month. Your child will receive a Pizza Hut coupon for a personal pan pizza.
Great new link for parents! http://www.additudemag.com/ It has a lot of helpful ideas for parents with kids who have poor organizational skills, who may be attention deficit or have unharnessed energy. I have found some good articles for myself.

How priceless is your unfailing love! Psalm 36:7
February 20, 2012
Now that the weather is getting colder, students need to have a warm coat, boots, snow pants, a hat, and gloves for recess.
With God on our side, we need not fear! So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" Hebrews 13:6

Dear Parents and other Visitors, 10/7/11
The fourth grade class will have Indiana State Reports on a Box displayed in the school hallway starting Monday. They have been researching interesting facts about people, places and other items associated with Indiana. They have then featured their findings on covered shoeboxes. Stop by to discover more about the Hoosier state.
In art class we have been making a pumpkin patch using torn paper. At the bottom of our art project we have written a poem about what we like to do in the autumn. We used many and varied adjectives in our descriptions. We reviewed that adjectives help us write with more detail and helps us paint a picture in the mind of the reader. One student even said,"Mrs. Murphy, adjectives make what I write more interesting." Oh don't you just love it when that little light comes on in the mind of a child? That's what makes teaching fun!
This coming Thursday the fourth graders will show off all their hard work at their recorder concert. Mrs. Best has been pleased with how much they have learned and how quickly they have progressed. It is sure to be a rewarding evening of recorder music. All are welcome to attend. Please contact the school for further information.
Blessing on your day, Mrs. S. Murphy

Welcome to the Fifth Grade
Book Groups: For their current selection of books, the 5th grade students will be producing either a play or a movie based on a scene or scenes from the book. They will be due Feb. 27, so it's crunch time. They are eagerly gathering crops as well as other students to join in as characters in their play. I cannot wait to see what they come up with.
Math: We have started our chapters in fractions. They are doing quite well with the adding and subtracting parts. Next comes mixed numbers and renaiming. The biggest reminder I can offer them is to ALWAYS remember to put the answer in simplest form.
BizTown: The 5th and 6th graders have finished up their 5 weeks worth of classes on economics. They concluded their studies with a field trip to JA BizTown which is located just behind Northcrest shopping center. They ran their very own "city", complete with a bank, city hall, broadcast center, and even a hardware store. Each student was given a job that earned them a paycheck. They were then able to write checks, start their own savings account, and request songs at the broadcast center. It was definitely a learning experience.
AR: Students can now take AR books on pretty much any book they read unless the test has not been created yet. We have purchased an online AR system in which students have access to the tests for any AR test out there. We started last week and the kids have been thrilled and busy taking tests that they previously could not take.

Welcome to Mr. Stellwagen's Middle School Home Page
8th grade at St. John-Emmanuel Lutheran School is a place for spiritual and intellectual growth. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves and reach for levels of higher learning. Algebra is where math explanations and work lead to climbing the ladder of higher learning. In U.S. History, we focus on that fact that history repeats itself, allowing us to learn from it. We also discuss the duties and responsibilities that come with being a citizen of a democracy. Literature is where the greatest thinking takes place. Socratic Circles and Active Reading are incorporated so that deep thinking and great questions can be brought to the surface. Art history and appreciation introduce the students to such great artists as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Georges Seurat (just to name a few).
